Our friend, Jeffrey Munroe, has recently published a book titled, Reading Buechner: exploring the work of a master memoirist, novelist, theologian, and preacher.
Here are some of Dr. Munroe’s thoughts on The Eyes of the Heart:
‘For many readers, myself included, what Buechner calls the understatement of his nonfiction is the authenticity and honesty that makes his memoirs so appealing. Buechner is an accomplished novelist. He brings a creative, light touch to stuffy theological concepts and moribund biblical characters. He is a highly literate preacher. Yet Buechner’s greatest subject is Buechner. He sustains four memoirs (and several other memoirish books) by exploring the depths of his life with unusual insight and clarity.’ (p.71-2)
