Dr James F. McGrath is the Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature at Butler University in Indianapolis in the United States. Over the years his work has ranged across various fields of interest, including New Testament studies and early Christianity, theology and music, and theology and science fiction.

His publications include John’s Apologetic Christology (2001), What Jesus Learned from Women (2021), The Bible and Music (2023), with forthcoming monographs on the life of John the Baptist and The A to Z of the New Testament.

As a scholar concerned with the public communication of scholarship, a Sunday school teacher in his local church, and a Christian educator at a secular university, James has found Fredrick Buechner to be a regular source of wise guidance and inspiration.

Buechner's own life and writing bridged divides and avoided easy characterization in ways that I have sought to make true in my own work and life trajectory.
